Why is Jiaogulan Considered to be an Adaptogen?

Jiaogulan tea has been long recognized in Chinese Traditional medicine as having multiple benefits in human health.  One of these benefits is that it is considered to be an “adaptogen”.

An adaptogen is a term that was ‘coined’ by Russian scientist, N.V. Lazarev in 1947.  The prerequisites to be considered an adaptogen include the following:
·      Must be a plant substance with healing properties
·      Must be harmless to the body
·      Has normalizing effect that enhances the body’s ability to resist stress
·      Provides balanced feeling and isn’t over stimulating

Adaptogens are found in other herbal forms also and are frequently used by naturopath and ayurvedic physicians.  Other forms of natural adaptogens include:

·      Ashwaganda – popular in Ayurvedic medicine and referred to as Indian ginseng, ashwaganda helps boost your immune system and assists the body in lowering cortisol (stress hormone) levels
·      Holy Basil – Helps regulate blood sugar, boost your immune system and regulate hormone levels and blood pressure; often referred to as the “elixir of anti-aging”
·      Licorice Root – helps increase energy and offers protection to the thymus against ill-effects of stress.
·      Golden Root – Offers protective elements against stress, particularly protecting the body from mental and physical fatigue.  Golden root, also called rhodiola also combats against aging, increases oxygen, improves memory and helps to restore normalcy to eating and sleeping patterns.
·      Astragulus – Reduces the ability of stress related hormones such as cortisol to bind to receptors and repairs the body from stress associated damage.
Jiaogulan is a wonderful and tasty choice as an adaptogen.  While the other herbs offer great advantages, jiaogulan is quite likely to be the most appealing to the taste buds.
